Guwahati: Ameer-e-Shariat of North East India, Maulana Tayeebur Rahman Barbhuiya has condemned the spate of violent crimes including kidnapping and murder in the Barak Valley area of Assam. The maulana has demanded state chief minister to take strong action and urged Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to visit the valley.
In the recent past there has been sudden rise in crime in Barak Valley that comprises three districts of South Assam namely Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj. There are incidents of kidnapping, robbery and killings yet the maulana said the local administration and state government are mute spectators.
“I strongly condemn these bloodsheds & cruelty and demand exemplary punishment for the offenders who are the real guilty so that no other person dares to follow this route in near future. Certainly, there are some loopholes in our district or state administration. The people responsible to maintain law and orders are actually busy in fulfilling their self interest and negligent about the cause of common people. As a result, criminals, opportunists and anti-social elements are taking advantage in performing such inhuman activities,” Maulana Tayeebur Rahman Barbhuiya said and urged the chief minister of Assam “to have immediate control over the situation and take stern action against the culprits and ensure safety & security of the life and property of the common people.”
He also demanded the administration to have a dedicated phone number for public to report about the movement of criminals. “All the Incoming calls to this number should be recorded so that the police cannot escape from their responsibility by making lame excuses. I request the Chief Minister of Assam to replace the existing ACS and APS officers of Barak Valley with competent IAS and IPS officers,” the maulana said.
He also expressed dismay at the inactiveness of local political leaders. “I am very much disappointed to see the inactiveness of some political leaders. The people have entrusted their faith on them with great hopes to live in safety and security where they failed miserably,” he added.
Recently, Dr. Bidyut Nath was kidnapped. Then Naaz (the grandson of freedom fighter Gazi Sikander) was kidnapped and murdered followed by the kidnapping and killing of school boy Shahadat.
“The entire episode of mass kidnapping & murder compels us to think differently and accept the fact that everything is going on under political conspiracy as reported by local dailies,” the maulana said in a letter sent on 23rd Dec. to state CM, Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, Union Minority Affairs Minister, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and others
He also appealed to local people to do their bid to ensure peace and harmony in the society. “I appeal to all the peace loving people of this valley to help the administration in maintaining law and order situation in order to ensure peace and harmony in the society. The culprits should be boycotted socially irrespective of their caste, creed and religion.”
Talking to TCN over phone, Maulana Nayeemuddin, office secretary of Imarat-e-Shariah, North East India, said most of the victims are Muslims but he also added that some of the culprits are also suspected to be Muslims. Crime graph has suddenly gone up here, he said.
According to him, Muslims constitute about 50-55% of the population of Barak Valley. On political representation of Barak Valley Muslims, he said out of 15 MLAs in the valley, seven are Muslims, and out of three ministers from the area, one is Muslim.
