Alexander Mikhalevich, deputy academic secretary of the National Academy of Sciences, said it made no economic sense to establish nuclear waste treatment facilities in Belarus.

“Russia boasts efficient nuclear waste recycling technologies. Therefore, nuclear waste from the future nuclear plant will be dispatched there,” Mikhalevich was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

A planned nuclear power plant near Ostrovets is due to start operations in 2018.

Russia will offer Belarus a loan of up to $10 billion for construction of the plant.

Mikhalevich said the nuclear waste treatment was aimed at obtaining undecomposed uranium and valuable isotopes that can be used again.
