Jose Eduardo Cojulum was travelling Friday on a highway in southern Guatemala when his vehicle was intercepted by gunmen travelling in two cars, police said.

Cojulum later said in an interview that the attackers followed him for more than 30 minutes before they started shooting and then fled after his car rammed into one of their vehicles.

Speaking from a hospital, he rejected the idea that the assailants were common criminals.

The judge is presiding over many cases related to human rights violations by security forces during Guatemala’s 1960-1996 civil war, which left more than 200,000 people dead.
