Cold wave continues unabated in Kashmir

Srinagar: Amid sunny hours for past few days, intense cold wave conditions prevailed in Kashmir valley. Minimum temperature across the valley stayed below freezing point. Leh town in Ladakh shivered at minus 14 degrees Celsius.

Gulmarg skiing resort in north Kashmir was the coldest place in the Valley, recording a low of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius, an official of the MET department told Agence India Press.

Chilia Kalan, the coldest 40-day period in Valley’s winter season has ended Sunday but there is no let up in cold. Pahalgam resort in south Kashmir was also freezing with the mercury plunging by 0.4 degrees to settle at minus 7.4 degrees Celsius. Srinagar city, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, witnessed a drop of 0.2 degrees recording a minimum temperature of minus 1.6 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius while the mercury in Kupwara settled at a low of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius. Ladakh region also saw the mercury dipping by a degree last night. Leh town recorded a low of minus 14.0 degrees Celsius and Kargil town registered minus 13.0 degrees Celsius.
