Pune’s cricket stadium to be named after Subrata Roy

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) will name their newly-built stadium on the outskirts of Pune as Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium.

In a statement Saturday, MCA said that originally the stadium was proposed to be named as Sahara India Group but “owing to technical reasons” the state-of-the-art stadium will be named after the chairman of the Sahara India Pariwar.

This stadium is being built in two phases and the work for the first phase started in November 2009. Designed by world renowned architects Hopkins from England, the work is being carried out by Shapoorji Pallonji and company.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has assisted the project by increasing the grant for the stadium to Rs.50 crore. To raise funds for the construction of the stadium, MCA invited bids for naming and other rights and it was won by Sahara India. It secured the financial package required to build phases one and two of the stadium and the club as well.

Besides having naming rights for the stadium, Sahara will build a club in the stadium with modern amenities and facilities with 40 rooms at their own cost and will get rights to sell membership for the club. Pune Warriors will be playing their home matches in this stadium.
