Army to conduct own probe into Kashmir ambush killing

By IANS,

New Delhi: The Indian Army Sunday said it was conducting its own probe into the killing of a youth in an ambush in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Army Chief General V.K. Singh said the army usually carried out a probe into any such incident to see if their was any fault in the operation and to rectify them.

“The army has ordered an inquiry already. Though we know what happened, we usually carry out a probe to see if there is any fault that needs to be rectified,” Gen. Singh said here on the sidelines of a civilian event.

The youth, identified as Manzoor Ahmad Magray, working with the Border Roads Organisation, was killed in the ambush set up by the army Friday evening in Chogal village, leading to accusations that the 24-year-old was killed by troops in a staged shooting.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has already ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident, the first such killing in the state this year, and the police have registered a murder case.

Last year over 100 civilians were killed in firing by the security forces in the Kashmir Valley during clashes with stone-pelting protesters.

Kupwara is around 70 km from Srinagar.
