Man posing as Punjab chief minister’s aide nabbed

Chandigarh : A man who posed as principal secretary to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and duped at least eight people of several lakhs of rupees has been arrested, police said Wednesday.

Gagandeep Singh, in his early 30s, was arrested near the Mohali border Tuesday evening.

His latest victim was Harshvardhan Singh, an employee of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, who had paid Gagandeep Rs.1.2 million (Rs.12 lakh) on the promise that his son would be admitted to an engineering college.

“Gagandeep has several identity cards and he used to introduce himself as principal secretary to Punjab chief minister and as a senior official of SGPC (Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee). He had taken Rs.2 lakh from Harshvardhan and promised to admit his son in an engineering college in Punjab,” said an official of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Chandigarh police here Wednesday.

He added: “At least eight cases are also registered against him in Chandigarh, Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ferozepur. Police are also checking his call details to ascertain his other contacts.”
