Maoists torch police post in Orissa

Bhubaneswar : In two incidents in Orissa Thursday, over 50 Maoists torched a police outpost in the communally sensitive district of Kandhamal while five rebels were held in Keonjhar district, police said.

Over 50 armed rebels attacked the police outpost at Subarnagiri, about 170 km from the district headquarters of Phulbani, when nobody was inside.

“Maoist posters and leaflets warning the government of dire consequences for anti-Maoist operations in the area and deployment of security forces were found at the site,” Superintendent of Police S. Praveen Kumar told IANS.

In the other incident, four Maoists were arrested during a combing operation in the mineral-rich Keonjhar district.

While three were arrested from the Rebana forest area, another was arrested from Telkoi area. Some arms and Maoist literatures were seized from them, police said.

The district headquarters of Kandhamal and Keonjhar are respectively 200 km and 235 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.
