Kolkata : Union Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Friday demanded a high level enquiry into the police firing in the Dooars area of West Bengal which left two Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) supporters dead.
“We condemn the police firing. But I don’t think that state government will allow a high-level inquiry. Earlier also there have been incidents of police firing but there was no proper inquiry. We want the guilty to be punished,” Banerjee told a press conference here.
She appealed to everyone in the hills to maintain peace and calm.
The GJM, which is spearheading a movement for a separate Gorkhaland state in the hills, called an indefinite shutdown to protest Tuesday’s killings.
Banerjee accused the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) of fuelling violence in the hills for political gains ahead of the assembly polls this year.
“The CPI-M is trying to incite violence in the area. This is an old tactic. The state government has totally failed to control the situation and solve the problem,” she said.
