Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh) : A school bus ran down a class 9 girl student here Thursday, sparking violence as locals clashed with police, damaged several vehicles and blockaded roads, police said.
Anita Kumari, 14, a student of the R.I. College, was mowed down by the Delhi Public School’s bus near Sasnigate area while she was on her way to school. The bus driver is absconding.
Demanding the driver’s arrest, local protestors clashed with police, damaged the school bus, targeted a number of private vehicles and even tried to set them on fire.
The situation was brought under control only after senior police officials reached the spot and assured the driver’s arrest within 48 hours.
“No student was present inside the school bus at the time of the accident,” police inspector Kamla Shankar told reporters in Aligarh, some 350 km from Lucknow.
“Taking into account the protests by the locals, security has been beefed up in the area. The situation is now completely under control,” he added.
