Kampala : At least 71 people were injured in eastern Uganda when supporters of opposing candidates attacked each other shortly after voting in presidential elections began Friday, the Red Cross said.
Villagers in the sub-counties of Buwalasi and Bukiyu attacked each other with machetes and metal staves. Eight people were hospitalised with serious injuries.
“People were injured and many had cuts on their backs and heads in two clashes that took place in two sub-counties in Sironko district,” Red Cross spokeswoman Catherine Ntabadde said.
