Ahmedabad : Nine years after 59 people were burnt to death in the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express near Godhra railway station in Gujarat, a special court here Tuesday convicted 31 people. The accused were held guilty under the following sections of the Indian Penal Code:
Section 149 (unlawful assembly)
Section 302 (murder)
Section 307 (attempt to murder)
Section 323, 324 (causing simple injury)
Section 325, 326 (causing grievous hurt)
Section 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant)
Section 395, 397 (dacoity and robbery)
Section 436 (arson, fire)
Also, some sections of the Indian Railway Act and Bombay Police Act.
The Godhra train burning incident took place Feb 27, 2002 and led to one of the worst communal riots in recent Indian history in which over 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed.
