New Delhi : The government Wednesday said the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) is being revised and the effort will be to strengthen local urban bodies, Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath said Wednesday.
“We will bring changes in the JNNURM in the 12th plan (2012-17) based on the experience gathered in implementing the programme so far,” Kamal Nath informed the Rajya Sabha during the Question Hour.
The minister, however, said the central government can act only after states submit proposal according to their needs.
“Strengthening of urban local bodies is basically a state subject. Government of India supplements their efforts by providing financial, technical and institutional infrastructural support for strengthening urban local body administration,” he said.
Giving out details of the plan so far, the minister said an amount of Rs.3,901.83 crore was given to the states under urban infrastructure and governance component of JNNURM while Rs.289.80 crore was given under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns.
