No plans to intervene in Libya: NATO

Kiev: NATO General Secretary Anders Fogh Rasmussen Thursday said the alliance has “no plans” to intervene in Libya.

“I would like to stress that NATO as such has no plans to intervene. We have not received any request in that regard and any actions should be based on a UN mandate,” Rasmussen said at a news conference in Kiev, after meeting with Ukrainian officials.

Fighting between anti-government protesters and supporters of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi could increase the number of refugees seeking sanctuary in NATO member nations, but the upheaval is not “a direct threat to NATO or NATO allies”, he said.

Rasmussen was in the Ukrainian capital for bilateral talks.
