Congress destabilising constitutional authorities for DMK’s sake: Jayalalithaa

Chennai: AIADMK General Secretary J. Jayalalithaa Thursday charged the Congress with being ready to destabilise every constitutional authority in the country for the sake of its ally, the DMK.

Referring to Communications Minister Kapil Sibal rubbishing the Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG) Rs.1.76 trillion loss estimate in the 2G spectrum allotment, Jayalalithaa said: “Kapil Sibal, by choosing to debunk the CAG report at an open press meet rather than before the Supreme Court, which is hearing petitions relating to the case, or the Public Accounts Committee of parliament, which is already looking into the issues raised in the CAG report, clearly shows that the Congress, for the sake of its ally, the DMK, is prepared to destabilise every constitutional authority in the country.”

Jayalalithaa in a statement issued here said two weeks ago the investigations into the spectrum scam seemed to be heading in the right direction.

She said the CAG, had presented before parliament a damning report in which it clearly enunciated the extent and nature of loss to the country that had come about due to the central government adopting a flawed policy in the allotment of 2G Spectrum licences for mobile phone services.

“The Supreme Court was seized of the Himalayan scam and had questioned the CBI why it was dithering with the investigations. The CBI, for its part, had conducted simultaneous raids in over 40 places owned or occupied by various protagonists involved in the scam and seized tons of documents,” she said.

According to her after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had questioned corporate lobbyist Niira Radia and former communications minister A.Raja, the “general impression was that very soon arrests would be made and the CBI, under pressure from the Supreme Court to get on with it, would file its charge-sheet”.”

Three days after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit here and apparently the continuation of the alliance between Congress and DMK was assured, Sibal rubbished the CAG report, Jayalalithaa said.

The CAG’s protestations that its calculations estimating the extent of loss to the Nation were based on absolutely fool-proof and time-tested norms have gone unnoticed, and this constitutional authority has virtually been undermined.

“The CBI investigation has run out of steam. The documents seized and the details obtained from interrogations have not led to any arrests,” Jayalalithaa said.
