ASEAN calls for lifting sanctions imposed on Myanmar

Kuala Lumpur : The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) called for lifting sanctions imposed on Myanmar after the country’s political life developed following the democratic elections and the release of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Indonesian news agency (Antara) said Monday that the informal meeting of ASEAN member states’ foreign ministers, which kicked off in Indonesian on Sunday, would discuss several regional issues including Myanmar’s democracy and territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

Indonesian Foreign Ministers Marty Natalegawa told Antara that the foreign ministers believe that Nyanmar witnessed a positive democratic development.

He added that the international community should recognize that development.

It is significant to hold regular meetings fir all sides concerned in Myanmar’s political, economic, and social development, he stressed.

On his part, ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan said that association was keen on developing economic, agriculture, and infrastructure relations with Myanmar.
