Ranchi : Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda of the Bharatiya janata Party (BJP) Wednesday filed his nomination papers for the Kharsawa assembly by-poll scheduled Feb 10.
Munda filed his nomination at the sub-divisional office in Kharsawa. He was accompanied by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief and chairman of the steering committee of the ruling alliance Shibu Soren, and the two deputy chief ministers, Sudesh Mahto and Hemant Soren.
BJP legislator Mangal Singh Soy had vacated the Kharsawa assembly seat in November to facilitate Munda’s election.
Soren Tuesday announced that Munda would be common candidate of the ruling alliance in the by poll.
Earlier, Soren had stated that the JMM would field its own candidate in the by-poll much to the concern of its coalition partner BJP.
After filing nomination Munda told reporters that “the people of the Kharswa are mature and they will write history in the by-poll”.
Munda became the chief minister last September last year and in compliance with the statutory requirement he has to get elected to the state assembly within six months of being sworn-in.
Munda had won the Kharsawa seat in 1995 on a JMM ticket. He joined the BJP just before the 2000 assembly polls.
He again won the seat in 2000 and 2005 on the BJP ticket. In 2009 assembly elections, the BJP’s Mangal Singh Soy won the seat.
