The labourers, who were sleeping, were buried alive when a wall of their house in Mahipur village, some 40 km from district headquarters Nahan, collapsed when falling boulders struck it, Deputy Commissioner Padam Singh Chauhan told IANS over telephone.

He said five people died on the spot while two escaped with injuries.

“Prima facie, it seems that the boulders were dislodged due to recent rains in the area,” Chauhan added.

It took several hours to extricate the bodies of the victims.

The government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
