Chandigarh jewellers asked to install security systems

    Chandigarh: In the wake of rising crime graph in this union territory, Chandigarh police chief Sunday directed jewellers to install security systems in their showrooms.

    The suggestion came in a meeting police held with the jewellers in the city.

    Recently Chandigarh was rocked by one of the biggest heists in the city’s history when a jewellery showroom was looted of over Rs.10 crore worth of goods.

    “Most jewellers in Chandigarh attended the meeting. We discussed various issues related to security. The jewellers also came up with some suggestions,” a police official said.

    Special emphasis was given on security of shops and manpower. The inspector general of police directed the jewellers to install proper security instruments, dialer connectivity with police helpline, hooter systems and CCTV cameras in the showrooms, he added.

    A gang of robbers dressed in police uniforms looted jewellery worth over Rs.10 crore from the Tanishq showroom in Manimajra town here Jan 12.

    Police have so far arrested nine accused.
