Panaji : After a nearly 20-day delay, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here Tuesday confirmed that an earthquake had indeed occurred in Goa Jan 6.
IMD Goa director K.V. Singh told reporters that the earthquake measured 2.2 on the Richter scale.
“It was a micro earthquake which was recorded on the Real Time Seismic Monitoring Network (RTSMN),” Singh said.
“We confirmed the earthquake only after our headquarters in New Delhi analysed the data on Real Time Seismic Monitoring Network,” he added.
The IMD had Jan 6 and 7 denied any possibility of an earthquake, after Goans woke up to reports of tremors in various parts of the state, especially in the Sanguem area of south Goa which is 50 km from here and is home to the state’s largest reservoir at Selaulim.
“The earthquake was recorded 44 km from Panaji at 0654 (6.54 a.m.) hours on Jan 6,” Singh said.
