Talking to the Deutschlandfunk radio station, the chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the German parliament Ruprecht Polenz stressed the EU had to make clear to the Egyptian government that it could ‘not act violently’ against the demonstrators.

He urged the EU to highlight the need for a ‘fair and free elections’ in Egypt.

Polenz said it was wrong for the EU and Germany to support authoritarian Arab regimes in the Mideast, thinking they could be used as a bulwark against the rise of Islamist groups.

Egypt has been the scene of mass protests over the past three days amid massive threats by the Mubarak regime to crack down hard.

At least six people have been killed as a result of the wide-scale popular protests.
