Dhaka : Bangladesh’s business community does not want shutdowns in the country as they are a setback to the economy.
Daily Star reported that they fear Bangladesh will lose its competitive edge as strike impacts production.
The business community suggested that disputes should be resolved in parliament and it urged the opposition parties to withdraw the two-day shutdown.
The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies have called for the shutdown, also known as hartal, that began Wednesday to protest the repeal of the caretaker government system.
A.K. Azad, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, said business people are perturbed by confrontational politics.
The economy suffers if businesspeople can’t generate employment due to destructive activities, he added.
Amjad Khan Chowdhury, president of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said hartal will push the country into anarchy.
“Of course, hartal will have a detrimental effect on our economy. We lose crores of taka in a hartal day, as we cannot sell our products. Hartal hampers both tax collection and export,” he was quoted as saying.
Asif Ibrahim, president of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said a shutdown was not desirable and added: “We must grab more foreign investment through creating a better business environment.”
