Deepika, a Class 12 student, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her house in Jakhoda village June 7. Following preliminary investigation, police registered a case of suicide.

But the police, not able to reconcile themselves to the reasons for suicide given by the family members, pursued various leads and zeroed in upon the deceased’s father whom they arrested Saturday.

“We have arrested Roop Ram. He had killed his daughter by strangulating her for the sake of family honour. He was suspecting that she was going around with her cousin,” Vijay Dahiya, investigation officer of the case, told IANS.

“After killing Deepika, the accused hanged her body from a ceiling fan to mislead the police. During interrogation, Roop Ram broke down and admitted that he killed his daughter to save his family’s honour,” he added.

Haryana is infamous for honour killing cases. Various cases of murders of young boys and girls have rocked different parts of the state in the last few months.
