Egypt to hold parliamentary polls in three rounds

Cairo : Voting for Egypt’s upcoming parliamentary elections will be held in three rounds in October, the ruling army council has said.

Preparations for the elections will start in September and the polls will follow within 30 days, Assistant Minister of Defence Mamduh Shahin, a member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Voting for the People’s Assembly, the lower house which has 504 seats, and the Shoura Council, the upper house with 390 seats, will be held at the same time, he said.

The three rounds of voting will have a 15-day gap between each round.

Half of the parliamentary seats will be reserved for representatives of workers and farmers, he said.

The country will be divided into over 180 constituencies, where 126 would be single-seat constituencies.
