Mexican politician becomes first to wear ankle monitor

By IANS/EFE,

Mexico City : A former Mexican mayor, who is facing organised crime charges, has become the first person in the country to wear an ankle monitor while awaiting the resolution of the case, officials said.

Gregorio Sanchez, former mayor of Cancun, was fitted with the ankle monitor Wednesday after a court prohibited him from leaving Mexico City for 20 days while it decided whether to grant an arrest warrant sought by the federal Attorney General’s Office.

The ankle bracelet “will allow him to remain in this jurisdiction and keep him from leaving the area established for his movements, with the goal of preventing him from evading justice”, an official said.

Sanchez is charged with organized crime and people trafficking when he served as mayor of Cancun, Mexico’s top Caribbean destination. He was arrested in May 2010.

Prosecutors allege that Sanchez and a group of accomplices smuggled Cubans into Mexico.
