Dhaka : Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of India’s ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA), during a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina here Monday lauded Bangladesh’s efforts to combat terrorism.
“Sonia Gandhi in a one-to-one meeting with Sheikh Hasina lauded the steps taken by the government to stop terrorism,” the prime minister’s press secretary Abul Kalam Azad said.
Sonia Gandhi is in Dhaka to attend a conference on autism.
India and Bangladesh are committed to fighting terrorism as it is not possible for one country to alone uproot it, bdnews24.com quoted Azad as saying.
“The leaders also discussed terror attack in Norway that left 90 dead.”
Sonia Gandhi and Sheikh Hasina spoke on bilateral issues of trade and regional cooperation, he said, adding: “The relationship between the two countries is very good, and it’ll get stronger in the days to come.”
Earlier in the day, Gandhi paid floral tributes to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War at the National Memorial in Savar, the Daily Star reported.
She arrived in Dhaka Sunday night on an invitation from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and was accorded a red carpet welcome at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Gandhi will also attend a special ceremony at Banga Bhaban where President Zillur Rahman will confer the Bangladesh Freedom Honour posthumously on former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi, who was in office during the Bangladesh Liberation War.
Gandhi will receive the award on behalf of her mother-in-law, who was assassinated in 1984.
