London : Muammar Gaddafi could stay in Libya if he gives up power, but what happens to him is to be ultimately decided by his countrymen, the British foreign secretary has said.
William Hague said it would be best for Gaddafi to leave the country.
“What happens to Gaddafi is ultimately a question for the Libyans. What is absolutely clear is that Gaddafi must leave power,” Hague was quoted as saying by the Daily Express.
The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Gaddafi and his son Saif al-Islam for crimes against humanity.
British officials have said they would prefer Gaddafi to be handed over for trial, but would also accept his staying in Libya if the rebels agreed.
