The 85-year-old has asked the party leadership to relieve him.

“I have requested (general secretary) Oscar Fernandes and others to relieve me. I want to spend more time with my family,” Basu told reporters here Wednesday.

Basu has worked for six decades at the party headquarters. He has seen four presidents from the Nehru family — Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

Though Basu left the Congress office after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991, new party president P.V. Narasimha Rao recalled him, he said.

A Congress leader told IANS that only Sonia Gandhi “can decide whether to relieve Basu or not”.
