Shimla: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) farmers’ wing will stage a demonstration before parliament during the monsoon session to demand a “farmer-friendly” land acquisition law.
The party would stage a demonstration outside parliament Aug 3, BJP Kisan Morcha national president Om Prakash Dhankhad told reporters here.
The central government has announced that a bill amending the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, will be introduced in the monsoon session of parliament that begins Aug 1.
“For the past seven to eight years, the purpose of acquisition of land has been changed from public purposes to obliging big industrial houses. The state governments have merely become the brokers of corporate houses,” he said.
Dhankhad said the government should not act as facilitator for big industrial projects and the companies should be asked to purchase land directly from the farmers.
He demanded that the new law should clearly define the term “public interest” and the farmers whose land was acquired be given profit. The acquisition deal, he added, should be at market price.
