New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday issued a notice to Delhi Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta, among others, for the crackdown on yoga guru Ramdev and his supporter early Sunday during their agitation here against corruption.
“The commission has been receiving complaints on the crackdown on Ramdev and the removal of his supporters from the Ramlila Ground after Saturday midnight,” an NHRC official told IANS.
“Based on these complaints and taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, the NHRC has issued a notice to the union home secretary, the chief secretary of Delhi and Delhi Police commissioner, and asked for a report on the matter in two weeks’ time,” the official added.
The police forcibly removed Ramdev and thousands of his supporters from the Ramlila Ground after Saturday midnight. Ramdev was airlifted to Dehradun in Uttarakhand from where he was taken to his ashram in Hardwar Sunday morning.
On Monday, the Supreme Court issued notices to Home Secretary G.K. Pillai and the Delhi Police chief asking them to explain what were the circumstances that led to the violent midnight drama.
A notice was also issued to Delhi Chief Secretary P.K. Tripathi. All three were asked to file tehir replies in two weeks.
