Srinagar : This has been tried elsewhere in the country, but for the first time in this summer capital city of Jammu and Kashmir petrol vends would not sell fuel to two-wheeler riders found not wearing helmets or triple-riding.
“We are in the process of pasting posters at various petrol pumps as part of the traffic department’s social awareness and public engagement campaign,” Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Maqsood-ul-Zaman told IANS.
“The posters will request the pump owners not to sell petrol to motorbikers who do not wear helmets. After all, the lives of our youth and other two-wheeler riders are precious,” he added.
The traffic department posters would also highlight helpline numbers of the department so that the erring drivers are brought to the notice of the police.
“We will be there in two minutes to enforce law once petrol pump owners or anybody else informs us about a rider not following the rules,” the officer said.
He appealed to the common people to assist the police in better traffic management in Srinagar which has been witnessing unprecedented traffic jams during the last few years.
Insufficient parking lots, unruly driving habits, road rage and the immaturity of the youth who have motorbikes are some of the reasons for the traffic chaos in the city.
“We are doing our best to straighten the traffic, but no official effort, however, stringent would succeed without the people’s cooperation,” he said.
