Mumbai scribe’s killing challenges freedom of press: Soni

By IANS,

New Delhi: Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni Saturday condemned the killing of Jyotindra Dey, senior crime journalist of Mumbai-based eveninger Mid Day, and said the attack challenged the freedom of press.

“This act has challenged the freedom of press and perusal of objective reporting. This incident is a sign of insanity perpetuated by mindless individuals in which innocent citizens are killed. No civilised society can tolerate this kind of attack on the freedom of press,” Soni said in her condolence message.

The minister said she was confident Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil will live up to his assurance of tracking down the assailants in the shortest possible time.

Dey was shot dead by unidentified assailants near Powai in northwest Mumbai Saturday afternoon, police said.
