Jayalalithaa to meet PM Tuesday

By IANS,

Chennai: A month after her AIADMK swept to power, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday and discuss important matters concerning the state, an official said Sunday.

She will leave Monday for maiden visit to the national capital after assuming office for her third term since 1991.

Issues like allocation of additional power from the central sector, increased allocation of kerosene to the state for the public distribution system (PDS), release of fertilisers, the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils, attacks on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, retrival of Katchathivu and other issues are expected to be discussed in the meeting, the official said.

Jayalalithaa had earlier written to the prime minister requesting him to allocate 1,000 MW additional power from the central sector for Tamil Nadu for a year. She had also requested him to instruct officials to complete central sector power projects in the state at the earliest.

Citing the reduction in the supply of kerosene to the state, Jayalalithaa had requested him to increase the state’s allocation from 44,580 kilolitres to 65,140 kilolitres per month.

She had also sought immediate release of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser for kharif (crops sown in the rainy season) cultivation in the state.

Citing the total allocation of 200,000 tonne of DAP for the kharif season, Jayalalithaa said the state has received only 20,000 tonnes as against 47,000 tonnes upto May 2011 resulting in a shortfall of 27,000 tonnes.

She had also demanded an additional allocation of 30,000 tonnes of DAP during June for cultivation.

Jayalalithaa will return to Chennai Tuesday evening.
