Thiruvananthapuram : Union Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh Monday said the environment impact assessment (EIA) study on the proposed Vizhinjam International Container Terminal in Kerala will be completed within a year.
The terminal is to come up near the famed tourist destination of Kovalam. It will be located close to a busy international shipping route and equipped to handle 4.1 million containers annually.
“Let me tell you that none from the previous Left government in the past two years came to me for a sanction for this port project. The EIA study has to be done in three stages – in the present monsoon, after the monsoon gets over and during the next monsoon,” said Ramesh.
He added that the state government could go ahead with the project in terms of inviting the tender and considering the financial aspects involved in the project.
