Hyderabad: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat Monday sought the support of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in its campaign against the violence in West Bengal.
Karat met TDP chief and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu here and urged him to join hands with other Left and democratic parties in what he called the fight to protect democracy and democratic rights.
After the meeting with Naidu, Karat told reporters that he briefed the TDP chief about the post-poll situation in West Bengal.
“A large number of people are being killed there. We hope to raise the matter all over country to protect democracy and democratic rights,” Karat said.
The CPI-M leader said they also exchanged views on various national political issues.
The CPI-M’s central committee, at its two-day meeting which concluded here Sunday, voiced concern over the attacks on its workers in West Bengal.
It called upon all democratic forces in the country to protest this onslaught against democracy and democratic rights.
The central committee also decided to launch a week-long campaign from July 1 against the violence and to defend democracy in West Bengal.
