55,000 evacuated as fresh floods hit China

By IANS,

Beijing : Fresh floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in southern China forced the evacuation of more than 55,000 people from their homes, a media report said Wednesday.

They were evacuated after heavy rains hit the provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guizhou and Anhui Monday, triggering floods and landslides, China Daily reported. The rain is expected to last till Friday.

Four people and about 1,000 farm animals were also killed in the northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in incidents caused by heavy rains Monday.

The civil affairs ministry said at least 100 people were killed and over 60 more were missing in two earlier rounds of rainstorms this month that caused floods and landslides.

The Wuhan Central Meteorological Observatory issued four rainstorm alerts between Monday and Tuesday for Hubei residents to brace themselves for the torrential rain.

In the hard-hit Yueyang city of Hunan province, fresh rain has further damaged the embankments of several reservoirs. Flash floods and landslides last week left at least 29 people dead and 20 missing in the city.
