During her 40-minute stay at Khadya Bhavan, Banerjee took umbrage at the files being scattered in the department and told an official: “The way papers have been kept it seems there is no monitoring. Please create a computerised data base. Please reconstitute the department.”

Banerjee, who interacted with officials and employees, began by asking: “Why are there so many allegations against the food department? Please tell me.”

Adopting a tough posture, she asked the officials in the presence of mediapersons: “Have you ever inquired why you cannot reach food to all the needy? The government provides funds. There has to be strict monitoring. Isn’t it your moral duty to set things in order?”

Banerjee, who also spoke to employees’ representatives, said: “You are also responsible for the mess. What have you done? Why didn’t you point it out?”

The chief minister also paid a surprise visit to the state fire services headquarters.
