Three cops suspended for vandalism in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, June 23 (IANS) Three constables of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) have been suspended after they were found guilty of damaging public and private property during a clash, Chandigarh police Thursday said.

These constables have been suspended on the basis of the probe report on the March 17 incident involving them, submitted to Chandigarh police chief Wednesday. The three have been identified as Swadesh, Sukhbir Singh and Pawan Kumar.

The incident happened when Punjab Youth Congress workers were protesting the policies of state government in Sector 42 here. They were moving towards the Punjab assembly complex but were stopped by the police, leading to a clash, in which 50 people, including 15 policemen, were injured.

“The inquiry officer had gone through the video clippings of the clash between police and Youth Congress workers. These IRB officials were found damaging the public property and private cars of the protestors. They have been suspended with an immediate effect and a departmental probe has been initiated against them,” R.S Ghumman, Chandigarh’s superintendent of police (operations and training), told IANS Thursday.

“We have also issued notices to five other Chandigarh police officers. They were present at the spot but did not intervene to stop the constables from indulging in these activities,” stated Ghumman.
