Saddam Rana and Shahbez Rana, brothers of expelled BSP legislator Shahnawaz Rana, were arrested Friday in Muzaffarnagar city. So far, seven accused have been arrested, police said.

The legislator’s brothers were Saturday presented before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vikas Goyal who remanded them to 14 days’ judicial custody, said Civil Lines police station chief Sanjay Vajpayee.

The victims, along with two male friends, were returning from Dehradun to their homes in east Delhi when the incident took place at a highway petrol pump around midnight June 21, police said.

The girls were forcibly taken to the rear of the petrol pump and molested. Their male friends were beaten up and confined to their vehicle, police said.

Two sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and the weapon used in the crime have also been recovered from Saddam and Shahbez, police said.

The two used the vehicles belonging to the expelled BSP legislator from Bijnore to escape after the incident, police said.

“The prime suspect who drove the girls in a SUV was none other than the legislator’s brother who was bitten by one of the girls,” police said.

Five other accused arrested are police constables Narendra and Zarar, Dilshad, Masroor and Raqib.

Chief Minister and BSP president Mayawati Friday expelled legislator Shahnawaz Rana from her party for the alleged rape attempt.
