Shillong : Rebels of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) Wednesday attacked a police outpost in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district, prompting a security alert in the region.
Armed men of the GNLA, which is headed by police officer-turned-rebel Champion R. Sangma, early Wednesday fired indiscriminately at a police outpost in Dobu area, about 300 km from here.
“A group of 10 to 12 armed GNLA rebels attacked our police outpost in Dobu, but the rebels fled from the area after security forces retaliated,” J.F.K. Marak, the police chief of East Garo Hills district, told IANS.
However, no one was injured in the attack, he said.
Marak said the group was suspected to have been led by another police constable-turned outlaw Savio R. Marak. “These attacks are aimed at creating fear psychosis in the area,” he said.
A high security was sounded in the region after the attack.
The three districts of Garo Hills region in west Meghalaya have witnessed a spurt in the GNLA’s anti-national activities, prompting the government to launch an offensive.
The GNLA, one of the five Garo rebel groups, is fighting for a sovereign Garoland. The outfit is believed to have links with the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland.
