21 years after Nawada riot, victims get justice

Patna: After a long wait of 21 years, the Muslims of Gulni village of Nawada district in the Indian state of Bihar, finally got some justice when a session court on Wednesday awarded four people with life imprisonment while six persons with 10-year jail for the killing of five Muslims during communal violence in 1990.

In total 57 people were named in the FIR filed by a villager Mohammad Yonus. After 21 years, the sessions court of Judge B.P. Lal in Nawada convicted 10 on 27th June 2011 in the case and acquitted 37 due to lack of evidences, while 9 died during the trial and one is still absconding.

On Wednesday, the court pronounced life terms for Lattu Yadav, Buddhu Yadav, Jaggu Yadav, Sahdev Mahto besides slapping a fine of Rs 20000 on each. The court also awarded 10-year jail for Parakash Mahto, Jawahar Pandit, Sunatan Lohar, Dhaneshwer Yadav, Baldev Yadav and Sunatan Lohar. They were also fined Rs.1, 5000. The court ordered to distribute the amount among the victims’ families.

It was March 15 1990 and occasion of Hindu festival Holi when members of majority community took out procession in front of the mosque in Gulni village. Muslim villagers objected to it. The conflict resulted in a communal violence in which five members of the minority community were killed several others injured. Those killed were identified as Noor Alam, Hafiz Bade Miyan, Peeru Miyan, Salman Miyan and Wahid Miyan.
