Akali Dal secretary and spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema said the alliance has announced that all shops, markets and commercial establishments would remain closed till 1 p.m. on July 4 to protest the price hike and the failure of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre in tackling spiralling prices.

The government had recently announced hike in diesel and kerosene prices by Rs.3 and Rs.2 respectively. The price of LPG was hiked by Rs.50 per cylinder of 14.4 kg.

“The Congress led UPA government’s nexus with the oil companies in looting the people has been fully exposed and mass protests by the public against this would force the centre to roll back hike in the prices of petroleum products,” Cheema said here Thursday.

He said the alliance partners have instructed their district level leaders to get in touch with different trade unions and get their support to make this shutdown a huge success.
