New Delhi: Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal Thursday expressed concern over university seats for Other Backward Classes) not being filled and said that he will meet the Delhi University vice-chancellor soon to settle the issue.
“OBC quotas are not being filled, this is a matter of great concern for me. If the cut-off is so high, how will the OBC quota in Dehi University and JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) be filled?” he said Thursday.
The minister also expressed concern over the high cut-off list of Delhi University and said the Supreme Court ruling of giving 10 percent relaxation from general cut-off to OBC candidates was also not working as the general cut-offs are sky-rocketing.
“According to the Supreme Court judgment, there has to be a 10 percent differential, if number one student is 99 percent, the OBC student must be 89 percent. Where do you get OBC candidates with 89 percent to 99 percent for quotas?” Sibal asked.
He said he is contemplating moving the Supreme Court on the 10 percent difference.
“The system is working against the policy of access and equity that we want in education sector. I will sit soon with the vice-chancellor of the Delhi University to look at these issues, and maybe move the Supreme Court,” Sibal added.
