Elderly man seeks legal shield against assault by son

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court Tuesday directed the Delhi Police to “ensure” the “safety” of a 62-year-old man who was assaulted by his unemployed son in his east Delhi house.

Justice A.K. Pathak said: “The station house officer (SHO) Mansarovar Park police station shall ensure safety of Ram Kishan Panchal.”

The court was hearing a petition filed by Panchal seeking protection from his son Surender Singh. Surender, married and unemployed, beat him up at his home in Mansarovar Park, he said.

Panchal said that he did not want to go home till the court directed police to take care of his safety.

“Despite various laws, meant for the welfare and safety of senior citizens, the police were not taking any action on my complaint against my son,” Panchal said in his petition.

He said, through a notice published in 2006 in a newspaper, he had disowned his son.

“Despite this, Surender was not leaving the house,” Panchal said, alleging that police were helping his son.
