New Delhi: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Wednesday opposed a military intervention in Libya by the US, saying it was for the Libyan people to decide how to resolve their problems.
The CPI-M also asked the Indian government to come out against military intervention by the US or the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
“The CPI-M expresses its strong opposition to the moves for military intervention in Libya by the US, Britain and the NATO,” a statement said.
“Just as in Iraq earlier, the Western powers are interested mainly in the oil wealth of Libya and seek to utilise the revolt against the Gaddafi regime to pursue their own interests,” it said.
“It is for the people of Libya to decide how to resolve their problems and what type of political system they require.”
The statement urged the Indian government to focus on evacuating its nationals stranded in Libya.
