New Delhi: Hours after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh took responsibility for the controversial appointment of P.J. Thomas as chief vigilance commissioner, which the Supreme Court has struck down, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj welcomed the remarks and said “let matters rest at this”.
“I appreciate the statement of the prime minister owning responsibility for the appointment of CVC which has been quashed by Supreme Court,” Sushma Swaraj tweeted.
“I think this is enough. Let matters rest at this and we move forward,” she added.
In Jammu, the prime minister broke his silence on the controversy over the appointment saying he accepts his “reponsibility” and respects the Supreme Court verdict.
“I accept my responsibility,” Manmohan Singh said.
Thomas’ appointment was termed illegal by the Supreme Court Thursday. The court said the appointment made by a high-powered committee, consisting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj does not exist in law. Swaraj had recorded her dissent to the appointment.
