Kolkata : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Friday filed in the Calcutta High Court its preliminary investigation report on the Jan 7 Netai killings.
The report contained in sealed envelopes was submitted before the division bench of Chief Justice J.N. Patel and Justice A.K. Roy.
Advocate General Balai Roy, representing the West Bengal government, had requested the court for a copy of the report to be provided to the state, while the CBI has made a plea to the court to keep the document confidential.
Dissatisfied over the progress of the probe by the state police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into the Netai village carnage, the court had Feb 18 directed the West Bengal government to hand over the case to the CBI.
The state government March 1 approached the Supreme Court challenging the high court’s order on the ground that the state police was already probing the case.
Nine people, including four women, were killed and 28 others injured in the Jan 7 clashes triggered by assailants allegedly backed by the ruling Marxists in Netai near the Maoist stronghold Lalgarh in West Midnapore district.
The hearing has been adjourned for two weeks.
