Arjun’s death irreparable loss to national polity: Congress

By IANS,

New Delhi: Paying tributes to veteran Congress leader Arjun Singh, the party said in a resolution Saturday that his death was an “irreparable loss not only to the Congress, but to the national polity”.

The resolution was adopted at a special meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) presided over by party chief Sonia Gandhi and attended by top leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and senior ministers.

Incidentally, Arjun Singh was dropped from the reconstituted CWC and made a permanent invitee Friday, a few hours before his death.

Singh, 80, a former union minister and three-time Madhya Pradesh chief minister, died following cardiac arrest Friday.

“He was one such statesman whose political acumen and skills were recognised by even his political opponents. On certain subjects and issues, he had a firm stand where he stood steadfast,” the resolution said.

“True to the Congress traditions, he, in his long political innings, was a symbol of secularism. He always raised his voice against communal forces and tendencies,” the resolution said.

“His compassion and support for tribals, Dalits and other backward sections of the society will be remembered,” it added.
