Shouting anti-BSP slogans, a large number of SP activists disrupted traffic and clashed with police when they were prevented from marching in Hazratganj locality here. Police used batons to disperse the protesters.

Though police claimed no one had received serious injuries in the incident, SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said a large number of party activists were hurt after police resorted to force.

“All is being done at the behest of Chief Minister Mayawati as she wants to suppress every voice against her,” Chaudhary told reporters here.

“While our leaders are being intentionally targeted, our activists are being arrested on false charges. Come what may, we will continue with our campaign to unmask the state government,” he added.

Under its campaign “BSP hatao, Pradesh Bachao (Remove BSP, save the state)”, SP launched a three-day agitation March 7 to protest against “anti-people” policies of BSP.

According to reports, similar clashes also took place in Etawah, Kannauj and other districts of the state.
