New Delhi: The Congress Thursday held a meeting of its screening panel for Assam to decide party candidates for the forthcoming assembly polls in the state.

Party sources said that the meeting was attended by Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who heads the screening panel, along with party general secretaries Digvijay Singh and Oscar Fernades.

They said state Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Congress unit president Bhubaneswar Kalita also attended the meeting along with some party MPs. The sources said that screening committee members heard views of MPs about the seats in their segments.

The screening committee will consider recommendations sent by the state unit and send names approved by it to the party’s central election committee (CEC) which will make the final selection.

The sources said that CEC is expected to meet March 12.

The two-phased poll in Assam is scheduled April 4 and 11.
